My husband Matt is a converted cowboy. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, but now is a tried and true Wrangler wearing North Dakotan. He doesn’t miss the hustle of the city, but he really misses is the Chicago food.Whenever we go back one thing we’re sure to grab is a Chicago Style Italian Beef. We’ve even had his family bring Chicago beef to us here in North Dakota! For Matt’s Birthday meal I decided to replicate his favorite Chicago sandwich in the crockpot. I couldn’t find the beef seasonings locally, so I purchased the Louie’s seasoning on Amazon *contains affiliate link*.
True Chicago Beef is made from thinly sliced beef, but because I don’t have a meat slicer I used two chuck roast steaks. Really any cheap cut of beef would work fine, it’s more about how you cook it than the meat you use.
All I did was toss the beef in the crockpot with the beef broth and beef seasoning on low for 8 hours. During the last hour I poured in the entire jar of giardiniera vegetables and liquid.
After 8 hours in the crockpot I use two forks to shred the meat. Then I just toss it onto french bread with a generous scoop of the juices. We like to top ours with mozzarella and peperoncini’s, but you could get pretty creative when it comes to toppings!
Now even if you don’t get to frequent Chicago you can enjoy our favorite Chicago treat! I hope you love it as much as we do!
